Book Review of the Month – New!

Many of my posts are often inspired by the books I read, and although I do briefly mention those books in my articles, I though it would be nice to ad a monthly “Book Review” to my website. I truly believe books can change lives, the new concepts, facts, and ideas they present can often encourage deep reflection on our part, and can open us up to new ways of seeing life. Most of the books I read are related to personal growth, relationships, happiness, and so on, which are the topics that inspire my own writings anyway, so I hope you enjoy this new feature and maybe discover a book gem for your library and for your life!

When the student is ready… the teacher will appear

And sometimes… that teacher comes in the form of a book, this has certainly been true for me! But it also means, we may not always be ready for a particular book, or it may not speak to us the way it speaks to others.

I remember reading a book by Deepak Chopra a few years back, I really struggled through it, it did not make much sense to me at the time. However, years later it fell into my lap again and I decided to read it again, to my surprise, the second time around every word made total sense to me, I was amazed.

Especially when it comes to personal growth or spiritual books, we need to somehow be “aligned” to a certain book in order to get its full benefit, so as we change and grow, books will have a different impact in our lives.

This month I will present to you a BRILLIANT book that fell into my lap by total chance, I had never heard of it, never heard of its author, and what’s more: it was written for men by a man, but I still decided to give it a try and I wasn’t disappointed!. I gained new insights into men (the male energy and the masculine nature), and was amazed by the profound way in which the author understands female energy and feminine nature as well. So I definitely recommend this book to men, but also to women!

The Way of the Superior Man

“The Way of the Superior Man” by David Deida

Listed under the categories of Relationships, Spirituality and Sex.

The people who will most benefit from this book are man and women that are in a spiritual path or search, that believe relationships are key to their growth, that want to improve their current relationship in ways that it can best serve themselves and their partners, that want to fully embrace and enjoy their sexuality with no guilt nor hang-ups, that want to better understand the dynamics of feminine and masculine energy.

This can be particularly helpful for men who really truly want to understand women and communicate better with them.

The book’s premise: there is a “Way of the Superior Man” that both includes and transcends the “tough” concept of masculinity of our ancestors, and the “sensitive man” concept of more recent years, a way that frees a man to be both powerful and purposeful, and also feel spiritually alive.

Deida takes the reader on a powerful journey into the heart of the contemporary masculine experience, and explores the most challenging and important issues in men’s lives. He writes with sharp honesty, so the reader needs to be open to certain truths that might infuriate some, but will certainly profoundly benefit those who are open and ready for these teachings.

Here below are a few excerpts from the book, which will help you get a sense of its contents:

“Every man knows that his highest purpose in life cannot be reduced to any particular relationship. If a man prioritizes his relationship over his highest purpose, he weakens himself, disserves the universe, and cheats his woman of an authentic man who can offer her full, undivided presence”

“It is so easy to give her love; it’s what both of you really want anyway. But as a man you are more likely to try to fix her. That is exactly not what she wants, and exactly what will make the situation worse, most of the time”

“The priority of the masculine core is mission, purpose, or direction in life. The priority of the feminine core is the flow of love and intimacy”

“When a man sees a beautiful woman it is natural for him to feel energy in his body, which he usually interprets as sexual desire. Rather than dispersing this energy in mental fantasy, a man should learn to circulate this heightened energy throughout his body”

Happy Reading!

Health and Spirit, the connection that matters!

As I was listening to some friends talk about illness and health… I got inspired to write this post.

I first would like to share with you that one of my worst fears used to be the idea of loosing my health.

I was not only scared about loosing it, I was rather obsessed about it. Every time I saw a weird stain or pimple on my skin I would start to worry; every time I had any kind of pain or sensation in my body that wasn’t normal I would start to panic and consider all the possible worst-case health scenarios out there. It was exhausting!

It wasn’t until my first exposure to the idea that our thoughts have an enormous impact on our health that I started to change this obsessive pattern, until it completely disappeared, to my great relief. After seeing this incredible shift in my own life, I started to pay more attention to the way people see and manage their health.

Health is one of the most important elements in our human existence. Some people take it for granted, others obsess about it, others abuse it, others believe they have no control over it, others feel responsible for it, etc. The list can go on and on and on, we all have a different attitude towards it.

Can you think of the way you see your own health? the way you manage it? Why don’t you take a minute and think about it… What does your health mean to you and what are your thoughts about it?

I was recently with a friend that was diagnosed with a progressive illness. She seemed to be totally resigned to her fate since it was, as the doctors put it, “genetic.” So in her mind, she was bound to get it and there was nothing she could do about it, except for alleviating the symptoms with drugs. That was that!

This is not uncommon, in fact, many people believe that if their parents or close relatives had an illness, there is a great probability of them getting it as well, and doctors support this point of view, unfortunately. The part that nobody tells us is that genetics plays a very small part on developing any disease, very small.

There are people who are diagnosed with a terminal disease, and they resign themselves, even worse, if a doctor tells them how long they have left to live, they believe it without question, because Doctors know best or because the statistics say so. They see no way out.

On the other hand, there are people who challenge their diagnosis, who fight the disease, who take an active part on their fate, and some become those lucky cases that make it, that beat the disease. Finally, there are the so-called miracles, when people heal completely and beat the odds without any medical explanation for it. There are as many scenarios as there are people alive.

One of my favorite phrases from Deepak Chopra (who was a Medical Doctor too) was: “You can accept a diagnosis but never a prognosis.” And this is very important to keep in mind. Having a diagnosis is one thing, but what will happen after, is a completely different one, and it depends on many factors that are unique to each individual.

As for medicine, we can’t deny that traditional western medicine has helped increase life expectancy and fight disease, however, this does not take the responsibility of our health away from us. In fact, the more complex and sophisticated medicine has become, the more we need to get involved in healing our bodies. Also, we should never dismiss other ancient, and more modern types of medicine such as: Oriental medicine, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Herbal medicine, Energy medicine etc. There is a great amount of knowledge and wisdom in each and every one of them.

But aside from the realm of medicine, there is one major truth, and that is: nothing controls our health more than we do… can I say it again? nothing controls our health more than we do…

A lot of people will strongly disagree with this statement, and I totally understand, a lot of people may even find it offensive, and that too, I understand.

Nevertheless, if we come to grasp the complex workings of our health, we start to see the truth in this statement. Our health is the result of a balance between our physical body, our mind and our soul, if we disregard any of these three inseparable parts of us, we are not seeing ourselves as a whole and we fall out of balance. This imbalance is what creates disease, and even accidents (yes, believe it or not!). In fact put in one phrase: our health depends solely on the level of harmony and connection that we have with our soul, that is all.

We could write volumes on the last paragraph, but to keep it simple and short for this post lets say this:
Emotions are deeply implicated in the causation of illness or in the restoration of health. When we have negative emotions, and we do not know how to handle them, or we are not even aware of them, they can create blockages in our body, if not dealt with properly, these blockages will create disease and later death.

Now, emotions are caused by our thoughts and our thoughts are mostly based on beliefs that are often unconscious. If we can disconnect form our thoughts and connect with our soul (our true consciousness) we can be in control of our emotions, and therefore our health.

The particular symptoms or diseases are quite irrelevant, as long as we are dealing with symptoms, we will always have symptoms to deal with (in different organs and different diseases). In other words, handling the symptoms is not the right way to restore a person’s health.

Being in good health means being in balance, so what a sick person needs is to regain his/her balance, and there are many ways to do this, and there are many types of healing techniques available, including of course traditional medicine, but the ultimate outcome will depend on the person’s awareness of their own body-mind-spirity connection.

This is a simple yet also very complex statement. Awareness means we need to “unlearn” a lot of things and we need to open up to a totally different point of view and devote the time and effort it takes to embark in this journey, probably the most important journey you will ever take in your human lifetime.

Just some food for thought…Take care of yourself and consider what you just read…

The opportunity is here!

This week I would like to reflect on a phrase from the Dalai Lama that really resonates with what I believe in, here it is:

All the world’s major religions, with their emphasis on love, compassion, patience, tolerance, and forgiveness can and do promote inner values. But the reality of the world today is that grounding ethics in religion is no longer adequate.
This is why I am increasingly convinced that the time has come to find a way of thinking about spirituality and ethics beyond religion altogether.

Many currents of thought say that the world is evolving towards a higher plane of consciousness and this shift gives us a great opportunity to find spirituality beyond religion.

Although all religions deserve respect, not a single one of them can pretend to own the whole truth of our existence.

Brought up as a Catholic, I recognize many great teachings of my religion and really value it because it has helped shape who I am, however, as I wrote in a previous post: Faith, Religion and Spirituality, our experience of God is very personal and can’t be fully dictated by a single religion.

Religion can help us enter the realm of spirituality, but in many cases it can also hinder our chances to find God, for we can become stuck with the little stuff, the things that are not important and that distract us from the essence, the truth. We should not forget that religions are human entities and therefore flawed, as history can attest to.

Plus, if we take all the major religions in the world, we can find a lot of similarities in their teachings and those similarities are usually what is really important, because that is what “unites” us all as a human family. As the Dalai Lama says: love, compassion, patience, tolerance, and forgiveness are values that we should retain. But all the other things that seem to define specific religions and distinguish them from one another are the things that give us a sense of separation and antagonism, which goes against our true essence.

In this new current of belief, for instance, spirituality and science can go hand by hand, paving the road for a new faith, also, the concept of oneness emphasizes the idea of unity, respect, love, cooperation, etc.

The world is changing at a really fast speed, and we can’t remain “stuck” we need to grow and realize that there is an incredible momentum towards a higher level of awareness, which does not dismiss all the values of our church or religion but it gives us permission to look beyond it to find an even greater connection to God.

The light that shines in everyone of us is the same and only, and if we can connect to that light we will see the entire world differently because we will realize that we are all deeply connected indeed. But in order to see this light, we need first to turn off the distractions: all the material noise of our day to day crazy race.

I find all this very exciting because it is my passion to follow this topics, of course, however, I believe that anyone, no matter what their interests are and no matter where they are spiritually speaking, can be open to this incredible opportunity to grow beyond our material existence and into a much deeper level of self.

Have a great week!
