Energy Tips for Everyday

WOW! It has taken me a month to get back to my writing! Having a new job, along with my parenting duties and other responsibilities in my life, has left very little time for my writing. Sometimes life’s duties takes us away from those things we really enjoy doing… But today I am back with a post on Energy Tips.

I recently listened to an interview with Donna Eden, author of Energy Medicine: Balancing Your Body’s Energies for Optimal Health, Joy, and Vitality. Donna has been working for 35 years, teaching people how to use energy in order to improve their health. Based on the premise that we are energy and that our bodies are governed by the flow of this energy, by working with this energy flow we can have a lot more control over our health and well being.

Energy medicine has been part of our history as human beings for as long as we have existed in this planet, many ancient civilizations have used it. I won’t go into lengths to explain our energetic body because it would take too long, but I wish to share a few interesting and useful tips that you can start using right now and that can benefit your life. One important thing to know is that our hands, especially our palms can gather energy in a very powerful way, so we can use our palms to bring forth that energy.

If you think of it, “the laying on of hands” is a religious ritual that accompanies certain religious practices, which are found throughout the world in varying forms, and they often represent the imparting of spiritual blessings, power, authority, and healing. Many energy healing practices known today, like Reiki, use the palms of the hands to balance the energy and clear the blockages of another person, the practitioner doesn’t even need to touch the patient to channel their energy. Other eastern medicine practices like Acupuncture, are based on stimulating the body’s energy points called the Meridians, through the use of needles, but those can be also stimulated with the use of tapping, as in Tapping or EFT, you can read more on EFT on the resources shared below.

According to Donna, we still carry within us, some instinctive gestures related to the knowledge of energy healing, because they are engrained in our DNA. For instance, when our belly hurts we often rub it with our hands, or when we are stressed out or worried we may bring our hand to our forehead, even if it is just for a few seconds.

Now, lets take the last example (our hand pressing our forehead when we are stressed), and explain the mechanics of it: When you get stressed you can loose up to 80% of the blood in your forebrain, so, it becomes very hard to think clearly when the blood is not flowing into your thinking brain (also called the prefrontal cortex). This withdrawal of blood happens in order to bring more blood into our feet and our body, so that we can run and escape, because this automatic reaction comes from our origins, when we faced dangers such as: being eaten by a lion, so our body still has this automatic responses, this one is called the fight or flight response.

The problem is, nowadays, we face another kind of stress that is not immediately life threatening but unfortunately, it is more of a constant in our lives, so it keeps triggering the flight of fight response, where we don’t really need it and this can create a lot of complications in our lives and in our health. When our blood leaves our forebrain, we tend to use our back brain more (also called the reptilian brain) which is our primal brain function that helps us survive in life threatening circumstances and that we share with all reptiles and mammals.

That said, when you are under “modern” stress you may react in less than optimal ways, as you cannot think clearly. So, coming back to our gesture of pressing our hand to our forehead, why do we do this? Well, by bringing our hand to our forehead, we can draw the flow of blood back into our forebrain, and we will be able to find our calm again and we will be able to think clearly again. The problem is, most people just make the gesture and then take their hand off.

So here is Donna’s first tip on energy medicine:

When you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed or, worried: do bring your hand to your forehead and KEEP it there for a few minutes, as you do this, try to also take deep breaths, and little by little you will feel more in control. I often tell my kids when they are out of control to take a deep breath, but that isn’t easy when you are crying desperately or totally scattered, so the forehand tip, paired with the breathing, is a much more powerful and faster tool to regain our calm.

Donna also shared a 5 minute energy routine to bring your energy back up and keep it flowing in your body, this is a good thing to do as a daily maintenance practice, especially useful at that time of day when you feel your energy dropping, this usually happens around 3 PM for most people, but everybody is different. So try to tune into your body and feel which would be the time of day, where your energy drains, this may also vary everyday.

This routine is short and easy and can really help you maintain a better flow of energy throughout your day, it takes only 5 minutes, once you learn it, you can do it anywhare! So, why not try it today!

If you want to see it, click on the image below and you will be taken to Donna’s video.

Donna has a lots of great tips in her books, recordings and videos, but for now, I just wanted to share these 2 that you can start using right now and can make a big difference in your days!

So, next time you feel stressed, remember to keep your hand on your forehead and breathe…

Have a Great Week and keep the energy flowing!

Book Review of the Month – New!

Many of my posts are often inspired by the books I read, and although I do briefly mention those books in my articles, I though it would be nice to ad a monthly “Book Review” to my website. I truly believe books can change lives, the new concepts, facts, and ideas they present can often encourage deep reflection on our part, and can open us up to new ways of seeing life. Most of the books I read are related to personal growth, relationships, happiness, and so on, which are the topics that inspire my own writings anyway, so I hope you enjoy this new feature and maybe discover a book gem for your library and for your life!

When the student is ready… the teacher will appear

And sometimes… that teacher comes in the form of a book, this has certainly been true for me! But it also means, we may not always be ready for a particular book, or it may not speak to us the way it speaks to others.

I remember reading a book by Deepak Chopra a few years back, I really struggled through it, it did not make much sense to me at the time. However, years later it fell into my lap again and I decided to read it again, to my surprise, the second time around every word made total sense to me, I was amazed.

Especially when it comes to personal growth or spiritual books, we need to somehow be “aligned” to a certain book in order to get its full benefit, so as we change and grow, books will have a different impact in our lives.

This month I will present to you a BRILLIANT book that fell into my lap by total chance, I had never heard of it, never heard of its author, and what’s more: it was written for men by a man, but I still decided to give it a try and I wasn’t disappointed!. I gained new insights into men (the male energy and the masculine nature), and was amazed by the profound way in which the author understands female energy and feminine nature as well. So I definitely recommend this book to men, but also to women!

The Way of the Superior Man

“The Way of the Superior Man” by David Deida

Listed under the categories of Relationships, Spirituality and Sex.

The people who will most benefit from this book are man and women that are in a spiritual path or search, that believe relationships are key to their growth, that want to improve their current relationship in ways that it can best serve themselves and their partners, that want to fully embrace and enjoy their sexuality with no guilt nor hang-ups, that want to better understand the dynamics of feminine and masculine energy.

This can be particularly helpful for men who really truly want to understand women and communicate better with them.

The book’s premise: there is a “Way of the Superior Man” that both includes and transcends the “tough” concept of masculinity of our ancestors, and the “sensitive man” concept of more recent years, a way that frees a man to be both powerful and purposeful, and also feel spiritually alive.

Deida takes the reader on a powerful journey into the heart of the contemporary masculine experience, and explores the most challenging and important issues in men’s lives. He writes with sharp honesty, so the reader needs to be open to certain truths that might infuriate some, but will certainly profoundly benefit those who are open and ready for these teachings.

Here below are a few excerpts from the book, which will help you get a sense of its contents:

“Every man knows that his highest purpose in life cannot be reduced to any particular relationship. If a man prioritizes his relationship over his highest purpose, he weakens himself, disserves the universe, and cheats his woman of an authentic man who can offer her full, undivided presence”

“It is so easy to give her love; it’s what both of you really want anyway. But as a man you are more likely to try to fix her. That is exactly not what she wants, and exactly what will make the situation worse, most of the time”

“The priority of the masculine core is mission, purpose, or direction in life. The priority of the feminine core is the flow of love and intimacy”

“When a man sees a beautiful woman it is natural for him to feel energy in his body, which he usually interprets as sexual desire. Rather than dispersing this energy in mental fantasy, a man should learn to circulate this heightened energy throughout his body”

Happy Reading!

A New Human Model

This week, I would like to present  my readers with a new concept of our whole human experience, or should I say a more “holistic” way of being and living.

I am reading a fascinating book: The Heart Revolution – Breakthrough for a New World by Annie Marquier, in which she offers a metaphor to help us better understand the interior dynamic of our humanity, she compares the human being with an ensemble made of a chariot, a horse, a driver (that leads the horse), and a master that sits inside the chariot. Symbolically, the chariot represents our physical body, the horse represents our emotions, the driver represents our mind and the master represents our true essence.

carrosse

The physical, mental and emotional elements form what we often call our personality or our “ego.” And the Master represents our true and transcendental essence. So lets look at each of these elements in more detail:

The Physical Body – The Chariot

Following this comparison, the state of our physical body: the chariot, depends on the maintenance given by an intelligent driver, but also depends on the way it is led by the horse. Since the state of our physical body is easily seen and measured, it can give us a clear indication of the degree of command the driver has over the entire vehicle.

The Emotions – The Horse

Interestingly enough, in the term emotion, we have the word “motion”. Our emotions determine our driving power, our strength, our capacity to act. Therefore, our emotions are a large reservoir of energy. It is the horse that has the energy to pull the entire vehicle, it is an essential element for the journey. The question is: how is this energy reservoir being used?

The Mind – The Driver

The driver: the mind, is the one that holds the thinking process and his functions are extremely important as he commands the whole vehicle. For instance, the horse responds to the thinking process of the driver and not to external circumstances, as we had originally believed. Also, the driver is the connection between the master and the ego. Ideally, the functions of the driver should be:

  1. Delivering the external information to the Master
  2. Listening to the instructions of the Master
  3. Successfully leading the horse in the right direction, according to the master’s instructions
  4. Taking intelligent care of the chariot

The Essence – The Master

The names given to this essence are as diverse as the different cultures and languages that exist, it can be called: soul, spirit, higher self, etc. Even thought the materialistic philosophy still, to this day, denies the existence of this essence, long standing traditions, the direct experience of more and more people, as well as recent scientific discoveries, are revealing its undeniable presence. The Master is the undeniable guide and the wisdom of the whole ensemble.

What is the current functioning?

The current functioning of our experience, has often denied or neglected the existence of the master and therefore has unknowingly missed its guidance, in other words: the driver has had to lead the chariot by himself, he has failed to listen to the subtle but vital instructions of the master. Up to recently, the driver had not developed a relationship with the master, in many cases he was not even aware the master was there. So the functioning of the vehicle has been very limited.

The driver does not have and will never have all the knowledge to lead the horse and the chariot in the best possible way, he needs the Master’s wisdom to do a good job. All the challenges, problems and difficulties that surround us at a personal and planetary level come directly from this lack of communication and our limited functioning as a result.

However, for the first time in our history, at least the history we can trace back to, we are closer to attaining the ideal human model, where The Master can recover its influence and authority. If we are able to truly integrate the master into our daily life, we will be approaching a great revolution of the human consciousness which in turn will allow us to create a new world for each one of us and for the humanity as a whole.

If you want to read more and discover how this fascinating human model can work for you, I encourage you to read the book, it is a revelation. But for now, I give you this article as food for thought!

Have a good week!

The Rise of Feminine Energy

I have heard so much about the rise of feminine energy, the empowerment of women, The Divine Feminine, the Age of Aquarius, etc. , So I decided to look a little more into what is this all about!
And, please! if you are a man, keep reading, as this is for you too 😉

fm-balance-yingyan

One thing is for sure, our world has been out of balance for a very long time, and not only our world but also every individual as well, for we have not yet fully embraced within us the energy of the masculine and the feminine, and we all possess both, to some extent. True harmony in the world and within ourselves can be achieved if we find this balance.

Our world has been in a patriarchal system for as long as 6,000 years ago… that is a very long time, during which women have been considered a weaker gender, unworthy, a second class citizen etc. In fact, in many corners of the world this is still true unfortunately. There is a long history of abuse and dominance to break with, and even though in the western world women have achieved certain level of equality, it takes a long time to break through many of the learned patterns.

There is no question that being put down continuously and pervasively for centuries, has affected the women psyche, the feelings of unworthiness and the need for sacrifice and suffering in order to survive, have been passed from generation to generation of women. As for men, they have developed a way of being that has totally suppressed their feminine energy and that has taken a toll on them too. The collective unconscious has also been a factor that has kept these patterns alive in both genders. The balance between masculine and feminine is sorely lacking in our patriarchal world.

Although men have been “in charge,” so to speak, they also need to free themselves from what they perceive as being masculine and manly, as there is a lot of distortion in that. To all the men reading this post, and all the women that have a man in their life I highly encourage you to watch and pass along this video: Tony Porter: A call to men. In patriarchal societies for instance, men are raised to totally suppress their emotions, from a very early age they are told things like: “men don’t cry”, “be a big boy”, etc. It is not ok for men to show their emotions, or else, they are not considered manly… that is wrong, and this is only one small aspect of the whole construct of manliness in our one-sided societies.

Women on the other hand, have achieved equality in many parts of the world, but not really bringing their feminine qualities out and having them validated and respected, but rather trying to emulate masculine qualities in order to be respected and taken seriously amongst men, so their true and most authentic feminine qualities are still being put down, to some extent, in order to be respected in a patriarchal society.

There is however a growing consciousness of this great divide, and more and more men are starting to tune into their feminine energy and more and more women are starting to awaken to the real values of their feminine essence. Some of the main qualities of the feminine energy are: intuition, compassion, creativity, nurture, healing, insight, etc. For the vast majority of women, these qualities are present, even if they are tamed or altogether hidden consciously or unconsciously (very often to attain equality with men and feel stronger.)

The current trend towards more balance between masculine and feminine energy may coincide with an overall planetary and cosmic phenomena that is bringing our planet towards a more harmonious state. According to astrologers the earth entered the Age of Aquarius and left the pisician age somewhere in the past few decades. The Aquarian Age is an astrological time period which is product of the earth’s slow precessional rotation, and lasts for 2,150 years, on average. It is believed that the Aquarian age is a time when consciousness of human kind will be raised.

“the Aquarian Age is a time when our consciousness will be raised, and so it will emphasize humanitarianism and brotherhood. Since the sixties there has been the civil rights movement, the gay rights movement, the animal rights movement, the Native peoples’ rights movement and a realization that the Earth itself is alive. Many New Agers claim these humanitarian movements are a result of the Aquarian energy now coming into the world because Aquarius is a sign which fosters humanitarian values. Aquarius is an air sign which in astrological theory means it is connected with intellectuality and communication. Therefore, New Agers say it is no accident that we now live in the computer and internet age. Aquarius, unlike Pisces, is not a masculine sign, and instead has more of a balance between masculine and feminine energy.” Joseph Waligore, Philosophy professor at Syracuse University.

The idea is not that we will move from a patriarchal society to a matriarchal one, and in turn women will take “revenge” or take up “the power,” that would create further imbalance. Ideally there will be an equal balance of interaction (I don’t even want to use the word power here) and a true cooperation and complementation of both energies, in every human being and therefore in the world as a whole.

It is still hard for women and men, even in open and progressive societies, to fully embrace their feminine energy. Women especially carry the memory genes of ALL the women that came before them. I would like to share a nice article that I read recently, it is a bit long, but interesting in this respect: Why it’s Crucial for Women to Heal the Mother Wound. I think we should understand the “mother” image in this article, not only as our actual biological mother, but as all the women that came before us, and their collective pain, fear, and coping mechanisms as something that affect us all to this day.

It is time for both genders to accept and embrace both energies in them, to realize that we have an incredible potential of growth and fulfillment if we allow this balance to take place within us.

Have a good week!

Rethinking History and Finding Where We Are

I recently came across a fascinating documentary about the evolution of human consciousness and how the heavens may be an active participant in it. As human beings we are not independent of the invisible forces in the cosmos that constantly surround us.

Most of life’s major cycles are driven by celestial motion. The spinning Earth causes night and day, activity and rest, and directly or indirectly regulates the daily drama of virtually every living creature. The second, longer motion of the Earth orbiting around the Sun causes a commensurately longer cycle and produces the seasons of the year. Plants spring forth, bloom, reach maturity and decay; fish spawn, bird migrate, animals hibernate; weather patterns and activities change, matching the effects of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The motion of the Moon also produces cyclical effects, seen in the tides as well as in the behavior of certain plants and animals. It is worth reflecting on the fact that all these cycles are the result of celestial mechanics, although contemporary man rarely associates the cycles with their respective cosmic cause: heavenly bodies in motion.” Excerpt from Lost Star of Myth and Time by Walter Cruttenden

According to Hindu Philosophy: life in the universe is created and destroyed once every few billion years, and each life cycle has 4 ages called “yugas” that mark different stages which the earth and the consciousness of mankind goes through as a whole, and it is believed that this cycle is caused by the solar system’s motion around another star.

yugas

Currently some astronomers and researchers are suggesting that our Sun (which is the center of our solar system) might be circling together with Sirius (also known as the Dog star). What is more interesting is that if this theory is true, it would seem that these two stars have turned a corner and are now moving towards one another. So, it could be that the motion between the Sun and Sirius may influence the stages in which humans are evolving, especially at a cosmic, spiritual, evolutionary level.

If we look at other great civilizations that preceded our times: the Mayas for instance, their calendar that supposedly “ended” in 2012, was in reality marking and ending and a new beginning. In the words of John Major Jenkins what ancient Mayans signified was the beginning of “a new world age cycle which is similar to the birth of a new cosmosmarked by a new galactic alignment.

The Ancient Egyptians believed that Sirius had a tremendous effect upon life on our planet and they were aware of the orbital dynamics of the Sirian system before 3200 BC (modern astronomy did not discover these facts until over five thousand years later, in 1862!.)

So, if the Hindu belief is right, according to the current alignment between our Sun and Sirius, The world is now in the ascending half of the cycle, in the second age or Dwapara Yuga, which began in 1900 A.D. This is really good news, as it means we are moving towards the “Golden Age” of humanity (Satya Yuga) and leaving behind the “Dark Age” (Kali Yuga.)

The rise and fall of human kind makes sense, when we think of earlier civilizations that seemed to have been far more advanced than we are at many levels. Maybe the history of the earth and of human kind is not at all linear but rather cyclical! I find all this quite fascinating, I hope you do to!

Sometimes a hug is all you need…

Continuing with the theme of body language, relationships, and connections, today I would like to explore another body language favorite of mine: HUGS. The truth is, the power of hugs is way underrated!

hugs

I come from a latin country, where we hug a lot, and I have to say that HUGS is one of the things I miss the most from my country, we hug our friends, our neighbors, our parents, our grandparents, our cousins, you name it, and we do it all the time!

I recently read a blog post from the Mars and Venus website (the official website for the famous book: Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus
by Dr. John Gray). It is a short article written by a witty blogger, on: “How to keep intimacy alive in the day-to-day grind”

Basically the article talks about how hard it is to find the time to nourish our relationship on a daily bases, especially for busy, working couples with or without kids; apparently, the secret short cut to nurturing and connecting is as simple as a hug!!

According to the article: Studies have shown that hugging for 20 seconds raises levels of oxytocin, which is the bonding hormone. A hug re-establishes the intimate connection and trust between you and your partner on a fundamental hormonal level. If you wish to read the full article, click HERE.

Another story I love to share is that of “The Rescuing Hug” which had a positive impact in the way medicine and hospitals treat premature infants, the original article appeared on Reader’s Digest and Life magazine in 1996. If you have not heard about this story, there is a quick description of it HERE.

Also, I remember a few years back I took a course on personal growth and one of the things that stayed with me was an exercise that we did towards the end of the 2-day course, the presenter had us split in pairs and showed us how to give each other an “energy hug” we had to hug our partner hard, really holding them in our arms, and then we had to take 3 deep breaths together, silently. The idea was that we could use our bodies and breathing to raise our energy and establish a deeper connection to one another.

I really liked this exercise, and all the participants agreed that they felt very relaxed, very connected and happy after doing it, this was back in my country, however, so we didn’t have much of a cultural barrier against close physical proximity. Hugging is a natural part of our human essence, beyond cultural and social conditionings; it is the first thing we do with our human babies, we hold them, we hug them, we press them against our bodies and that physical contact is a very important factor on their survival. If you wish to read more about this, I recommend the article: The Experience of Touch: Research Points to a Critical Role by Daniel Goleman, 1988.

After moving to the US I slowly but surely stopped hugging people, to respect the cultural norm here and to avoid sending mixed messages, but this had a toll on my emotional well being, so finally, after many years, I have decided to allow myself to be who I am, and hope for the best. I still don’t do it as freely as I would in my country but I do it as much as I can and often find myself apologizing when people are surprised or taken aback by it, I just tell them I am from a different culture. I really believe Americans would greatly benefit from more free hugs!

I have shared many conversations about this with American friends who have traveled or lived in countries were there are less “physical boundaries” and they all agree that one of the things they liked and miss most about those cultures was their “warmth” and the hugs, kisses and other ways to freely connect to other people with our bodies.

I find that here many people are quick to associate this easy-body connection with the danger of inappropriate touching, so they try to protect themselves from it, and teach their kids to avoid touch because of this. I feel however that there can be a happy medium that is much healthier and that would allow people to feel a lot more connected and supported.

Growing up I had a very clear idea of what was appropriate and what was not, and I fully enjoyed the freedom of connecting with friends, cousins, relatives, etc. using my body in a healthy way. So here, I just wanted to start a conversation on how cultural and social codes may sometimes prevent us from getting closer and more connected to people around us. That said, I know a lot of Americans that are big huggers, thank God!

Sometimes a hug is all you need

Have a good week!

An Awakening for Human Kind…?

Today is an important day, as many of you have probably heard, there has been a lot of talk about the Mayan Calendar, the Galactic Alignment, The Transition from the Piscean Age to the Aquarian Age, The possibility of an Evolutionary Leap, etc.

stars

The truth is, whatever happens these next few days, there is no denying that the human race has been going through great turmoil, due in great extent to the incredible speed at which Science and Technology has evolved and is presenting brand new challenges to our daily lives, and to our collective existence. There is a need for change at a great scale.

I personally believe that the world will end as we know it. The challenges we are dealing with are so great that we are faced with the opportunity of growth as a species, just as a great personal challenge can help us grow, we can also grow collectively.

There is a belief that the galactic alignment that will take place between tonight and tomorrow will involve an energetic shift that will affect our planet and everyone of us. This might be true, or not, but if this is true, the energy shift might indeed be a conduit for a collective leap in evolution, a leap in consciousness, an experience of awakening to a brand new world (or a different world view if you wish). The idea also comes with the belief that we are entering the age of Aquarius.

“If you don’t follow astrology, you may have no idea what the Age of Aquarius is. Basically, each of the twelve different astrological signs has an age associated with it. These ages change over time depending on which of the signs appears during the morning of the spring equinox. Currently, most people agree that we are in the Age of Pisces. The Age of Aquarius 2012 theory states that the new age will start on December 21, 2012 (TODAY), the last day of the Mayan Long Count calendar.” http://www.paganspace.net

In talking about the Aquarian age, I found a nice piece (at http://www.3ho.org) that lists the characters of this age, and it goes in line with what I said above. This list can give us a good guide for those changes needed in the world.

THE CHARACTER OF THE AQUARIAN AGE:

  • Intellect is not enough. We need a new relationship to intuition, emotion, and instinct.
  • Information is not enough. Neither is knowledge. We need wisdom.
  • Learning is not enough. We must learn how to learn.
  • Complexity is increasing as is our need to deal with it.
  • This is an age of paradox – more global and more individual with fewer boundaries and more demand for political separations.
  • Everything is faster and we have less time. We need far more love and unity for we have more fear and tremendous insecurity.
  • We require a reconciliation and integration of the spiritual side of life with the technological and material sides – a spiritual fitness to sense values and meaning.
  • There is no isolation. Each action we take must be considered ecologically and globally because each person does affect, directly or indirectly, vast networks of people and other living beings and places.
  • Change and learning is continuous and life-long. We must maintain mental, emotional, and physical flexibility.
  • Stamina and constant peak performance are the common benchmarks to evaluate all people and their work, and the need is to go inward and regenerate.

So, I leave you this as food for thought, whether you believe in any major event taking place these next few days or not, why don’t you start letting a major positive change take place in your own life, for a better you and a better world!

I wish you all, my dear readers a HAPPY CHRISTMAS and a wonderful NEW BEGINNING!

I will take a few days off my writing but will be back next year, in a brand new world (I hope!)

Have a great week!
