A New Earth – Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose

I believe in the amazing power of books. There are books that can transport you to magical places and reawaken your imagination, there are books that can give you comfort and peace when you most need it, and then, there are books that can totally shake your world and open up a whole new spectrum into your life; it is one of the latter kind that I want to share with you today.

A New Earth

I have just finished reading A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. The author of The Power of Now has done it again… totally opened up my mind to a new dimension, and I am so thankful for it.

This book is not for everyone, you have to be in a specific place in your life and in your spiritual journey in order to make sense of this book, but it is definitely worth a try, if anything, just to see where you are in this journey!

The premise of this book is that we all have one single inner purpose in our lifetime, and that is: Awakening to our true nature. Once that inner purpose is realized, then we can have many successful outer purposes (what we do and what we achieve during our human life), but none of these outer purposes will be really meaningful nor fulfilling unless we first realize our inner purpose.

I have copied an excerpt below that I feel gives a good idea of what this book is about:

“As soon as you rise above mere survival, the question of meaning and purpose becomes of paramount importance in your life. Many people feel caught up in the routines of daily living that seem to deprive their life of significance. Some believe life is passing them by or has passed them by already. Others feel severely restricted by the demands of their job and supporting a family or by their financial or living situation. Some are consumed by acute stress, others by acute boredom. Some are lost in frantic doing; others are lost in stagnation. Many people long for the freedom and expansion that prosperity promises. Others already enjoy the relative freedom that comes with prosperity and discover that even that is not enough to endow their lives with meaning. There is no substitute for finding true purpose. But the true or primary purpose of your life cannot be found on the outer level. It does not concern what you do but what you are – that is to say, your state of consciousness.”

Nothing we do, whether it is working, parenting, socializing, making love, etc. has true and real meaning unless we have awaken to our inner purpose, only then, every moment of our human lives will be meaningful and fulfilling, regardless of what it is.

I hope I have triggered your curiosity and you decide to look at this book because it is a real Gem!

Have a Great Week!

A New Human Model

This week, I would like to present  my readers with a new concept of our whole human experience, or should I say a more “holistic” way of being and living.

I am reading a fascinating book: The Heart Revolution – Breakthrough for a New World by Annie Marquier, in which she offers a metaphor to help us better understand the interior dynamic of our humanity, she compares the human being with an ensemble made of a chariot, a horse, a driver (that leads the horse), and a master that sits inside the chariot. Symbolically, the chariot represents our physical body, the horse represents our emotions, the driver represents our mind and the master represents our true essence.

The physical, mental and emotional elements form what we often call our personality or our “ego.” And the Master represents our true and transcendental essence. So lets look at each of these elements in more detail:

The Physical Body – The Chariot

Following this comparison, the state of our physical body: the chariot, depends on the maintenance given by an intelligent driver, but also depends on the way it is led by the horse. Since the state of our physical body is easily seen and measured, it can give us a clear indication of the degree of command the driver has over the entire vehicle.

The Emotions – The Horse

Interestingly enough, in the term emotion, we have the word “motion”. Our emotions determine our driving power, our strength, our capacity to act. Therefore, our emotions are a large reservoir of energy. It is the horse that has the energy to pull the entire vehicle, it is an essential element for the journey. The question is: how is this energy reservoir being used?

The Mind – The Driver

The driver: the mind, is the one that holds the thinking process and his functions are extremely important as he commands the whole vehicle. For instance, the horse responds to the thinking process of the driver and not to external circumstances, as we had originally believed. Also, the driver is the connection between the master and the ego. Ideally, the functions of the driver should be:

  1. Delivering the external information to the Master
  2. Listening to the instructions of the Master
  3. Successfully leading the horse in the right direction, according to the master’s instructions
  4. Taking intelligent care of the chariot

The Essence – The Master

The names given to this essence are as diverse as the different cultures and languages that exist, it can be called: soul, spirit, higher self, etc. Even thought the materialistic philosophy still, to this day, denies the existence of this essence, long standing traditions, the direct experience of more and more people, as well as recent scientific discoveries, are revealing its undeniable presence. The Master is the undeniable guide and the wisdom of the whole ensemble.

What is the current functioning?

The current functioning of our experience, has often denied or neglected the existence of the master and therefore has unknowingly missed its guidance, in other words: the driver has had to lead the chariot by himself, he has failed to listen to the subtle but vital instructions of the master. Up to recently, the driver had not developed a relationship with the master, in many cases he was not even aware the master was there. So the functioning of the vehicle has been very limited.

The driver does not have and will never have all the knowledge to lead the horse and the chariot in the best possible way, he needs the Master’s wisdom to do a good job. All the challenges, problems and difficulties that surround us at a personal and planetary level come directly from this lack of communication and our limited functioning as a result.

However, for the first time in our history, at least the history we can trace back to, we are closer to attaining the ideal human model, where The Master can recover its influence and authority. If we are able to truly integrate the master into our daily life, we will be approaching a great revolution of the human consciousness which in turn will allow us to create a new world for each one of us and for the humanity as a whole.

If you want to read more and discover how this fascinating human model can work for you, I encourage you to read the book, it is a revelation. But for now, I give you this article as food for thought!

The Rise of Feminine Energy

I have heard so much about the rise of feminine energy, the empowerment of women, The Divine Feminine, the Age of Aquarius, etc. , So I decided to look a little more into what is this all about!
And, please! if you are a man, keep reading, as this is for you too 😉

One thing is for sure, our world has been out of balance for a very long time, and not only our world but also every individual as well, for we have not yet fully embraced within us the energy of the masculine and the feminine, and we all possess both, to some extent. True harmony in the world and within ourselves can be achieved if we find this balance.

Our world has been in a patriarchal system for as long as 6,000 years ago… that is a very long time, during which women have been considered a weaker gender, unworthy, a second class citizen etc. In fact, in many corners of the world this is still true unfortunately. There is a long history of abuse and dominance to break with, and even though in the western world women have achieved certain level of equality, it takes a long time to break through many of the learned patterns.

There is no question that being put down continuously and pervasively for centuries, has affected the women psyche, the feelings of unworthiness and the need for sacrifice and suffering in order to survive, have been passed from generation to generation of women. As for men, they have developed a way of being that has totally suppressed their feminine energy and that has taken a toll on them too. The collective unconscious has also been a factor that has kept these patterns alive in both genders. The balance between masculine and feminine is sorely lacking in our patriarchal world.

Although men have been “in charge,” so to speak, they also need to free themselves from what they perceive as being masculine and manly, as there is a lot of distortion in that. To all the men reading this post, and all the women that have a man in their life I highly encourage you to watch and pass along this video: Tony Porter: A call to men. In patriarchal societies for instance, men are raised to totally suppress their emotions, from a very early age they are told things like: “men don’t cry”, “be a big boy”, etc. It is not ok for men to show their emotions, or else, they are not considered manly… that is wrong, and this is only one small aspect of the whole construct of manliness in our one-sided societies.

Women on the other hand, have achieved equality in many parts of the world, but not really bringing their feminine qualities out and having them validated and respected, but rather trying to emulate masculine qualities in order to be respected and taken seriously amongst men, so their true and most authentic feminine qualities are still being put down, to some extent, in order to be respected in a patriarchal society.

There is however a growing consciousness of this great divide, and more and more men are starting to tune into their feminine energy and more and more women are starting to awaken to the real values of their feminine essence. Some of the main qualities of the feminine energy are: intuition, compassion, creativity, nurture, healing, insight, etc. For the vast majority of women, these qualities are present, even if they are tamed or altogether hidden consciously or unconsciously (very often to attain equality with men and feel stronger.)

The current trend towards more balance between masculine and feminine energy may coincide with an overall planetary and cosmic phenomena that is bringing our planet towards a more harmonious state. According to astrologers the earth entered the Age of Aquarius and left the pisician age somewhere in the past few decades. The Aquarian Age is an astrological time period which is product of the earth’s slow precessional rotation, and lasts for 2,150 years, on average. It is believed that the Aquarian age is a time when consciousness of human kind will be raised.

“the Aquarian Age is a time when our consciousness will be raised, and so it will emphasize humanitarianism and brotherhood. Since the sixties there has been the civil rights movement, the gay rights movement, the animal rights movement, the Native peoples’ rights movement and a realization that the Earth itself is alive. Many New Agers claim these humanitarian movements are a result of the Aquarian energy now coming into the world because Aquarius is a sign which fosters humanitarian values. Aquarius is an air sign which in astrological theory means it is connected with intellectuality and communication. Therefore, New Agers say it is no accident that we now live in the computer and internet age. Aquarius, unlike Pisces, is not a masculine sign, and instead has more of a balance between masculine and feminine energy.” Joseph Waligore, Philosophy professor at Syracuse University.

The idea is not that we will move from a patriarchal society to a matriarchal one, and in turn women will take “revenge” or take up “the power,” that would create further imbalance. Ideally there will be an equal balance of interaction (I don’t even want to use the word power here) and a true cooperation and complementation of both energies, in every human being and therefore in the world as a whole.

It is still hard for women and men, even in open and progressive societies, to fully embrace their feminine energy. Women especially carry the memory genes of ALL the women that came before them. I would like to share a nice article that I read recently, it is a bit long, but interesting in this respect: Why it’s Crucial for Women to Heal the Mother Wound. I think we should understand the “mother” image in this article, not only as our actual biological mother, but as all the women that came before us, and their collective pain, fear, and coping mechanisms as something that affect us all to this day.

It is time for both genders to accept and embrace both energies in them, to realize that we have an incredible potential of growth and fulfillment if we allow this balance to take place within us.

Have a good week!

The Truth is Within Us

I have always been deeply interested and curious about the striking similarities we can find in the teachings of great Spiritual Teachers like Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, and others. These great Spiritual Teachers have embodied proof of the undeniable existence of God (the Divine, the Cosmic Universe, Consciousness, the Creator, etc. )

However, the Spiritual Teachers did not personally start any religion, they simply shared their teachings and hoped that they would spread, so in time, their followers gathered in their name and established institutionalized religions based on their Masters’ teachings. Most institutionalized religions are based on ancient scriptures that are believed to represent the original teachings of the great Masters.

The problem that often arises when following scriptures is the conflicting interpretations of words. Although words and languages are one of our most trusted ways to communicate knowledge, words are limited and can be interpreted differently by different people in different stages of human history and evolution.

Therefore, it is hard to own the truth behind the words, especially if the words are being interpreted solely with our intellect, and in most cases people don’t even seek to interpret the words, they just take the interpretations of those who came before them and make them their own; which is what happens in most religions.

The reason why we can’t rely on our intellect or that of our ancestors is because the truth of God can not really be explained or measured, it can only be experienced. Our reasoning can not possibly grasp the immensity of the Divine, so it is literally impossible to convey it with words.

Another problem with religions is that in most cases they worship their Spiritual Leader and by doing so they often forget about the essence of their message. True Spiritual leaders are not seeking to be worshiped, they are trying to convey a message, the message of their experience of God. I once heard a metaphor that said that Spiritual Teachers are like a teapot containing a delicious magical tea, but religions are focused on worshiping the teapot instead of drinking the tea!

The experience of God or rather the experience of Truth (the truth of our existence) is open to every single human being, regardless of their religion or lack of, their level of education, their culture, their color, etc. there are no conditions to the experience of God, it is accessible to every single one of us. This is because the experience is unique to each of us and the truth is within everyone of us.

Although we can certainly use the wise teachings offered by religions, we need to seek the truth inside ourselves, if we don’t do this, the truth will never be revealed to us. The experience of God (or truth), is the inner knowing that lies dormant within every human being. This is something most great Spiritual Leaders have said, in different ways:

Jesus: “The kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21)

Prophet Muhammad: “There is no intermediary between God and man. By remembering God, a person establishes direct contact with Him.”

“The secret of Buddhism is to remove all ideas, all concepts, in order for the truth to have a chance to reveal itself.” Thích Nhất Hạnh

The story of Brahma in Hinduism: “Brahma seated himself on the floating Lotus and looked in all directions for any other beings. Not seeing anyone around but feeling a desire for knowledge, he meditated, seeking knowledge within himself. There he found Truth, God himself, in his own heart, and looking around he now saw God everywhere.”

It is by removing the obstacles to our understanding that the truth will reveal itself from within. The problem is that our material existence brings a lot of obstacles to our understanding of the truth. Our judgments and resistance of our surroundings are major obstacles to our connection with our inner wisdom.

It is not easy to let go of these obstacles (distractions) as long as we are in a human body, but if we see our body as the temple that holds our spirit, our soul, our essence and our truth, we can begin to connect with it, even through our body itself. If we let go of our mind reasoning and logic, and our sense-based perceptions and judgments we can begin to connect to our inner knowing, we can allow it to come out, and we can start to feel the truth, to experience it.

The teachings of religions, as much as our everyday life experiences and relationships can be great teachers, because God (Truth) is revealing itself to us everyday and through everything, but it is only until we “take our blinders off” (remove the obstacles) that we can finally see the truth or rather feel it.

I encourage you to find ways in which to quiet your mind and let go of judgments, in order to find that silence within that will help you reveal the inner wisdom that lies beneath you.

Have a good week!

Essence vs. Form

Once again, one of my dear friends has contributed to my inspiration today by sending me a small paragraph about manifesting. Thanks my dear!

I have written a few posts about manifesting before (you can access them below under “related posts”,) but it is definitely an extensive subject, so today I would like to add yet another incredibly powerful tool that we can use to attain a happier life, maybe the most important tool of all.

The Law of Attraction and the idea of Manifesting the life you want, are concepts that have been around for a long time, but they became more widespread and popular after the movie and the book “The Secret” came out. Many people, however, became disenchanted after awhile, when they realized that no matter how hard they tried to use all the tools and exercises given in the book and movie, they could not really manifest what they wanted.

There are many things involved in manifesting the life we want, but ultimately, we need to reflect on the meaning of an “ideal life” what is it exactly?

Each of us has a different set of ideas, beliefs, goals, objectives, etc. We may have a clear picture of what our “ideal life” will look like or, we may not have a clear picture, in any case, we all have ideas of the things and outcomes we want to obtain and achieve in life.

The problem is, we can’t really know what our ideal life is, until we understand what our true essence is.

People desire different things in life, and they give them specific forms, like a big house, a specific job, having children, getting married, travel the world, having a skinny body, a new car, etc. The list is endless.

Most of us get stuck with these “forms” and forget about the true “essence” of our yearning, and that makes the whole difference when it comes to manifesting.

Unlike the form, the essence of what we all want is much simpler, and it is pretty much the same for all of us.

Most of us will agree that we want: true love, happiness, peace, success, true connection, comfort, freedom, etc. But we mistakenly think that these can only show up in one specific form (the big house, the marriage, the job, etc.)

By attaching ourselves to specific forms, we limit our options.
Instead, if we are able to connect to the essence of our yearning (that is the qualities that we want to experience in life) we will eventually bring to our lives what we really need and want.

Once we define the qualities/essence we want to experience in our lives, we need to cultivate them everyday. We need to become that essence: bring those qualities into our everyday actions and decisions; and as we do that, we will start to see those qualities all around us.

Then, that essence will take whatever form it needs to take, and when it does, we will have the clarity to recognize it and take action toward making things happen, and THAT is true manifesting, beyond our dreams.

The Law of Attraction states that you need to have clarity about what you want, and it is OK to have clear ideas of the things or outcomes we are after, however, it is even more important to detach from those forms. I know this may sound counter intuitive, but it is not, as long as we stick to the essence and are flexible about the forms, we are following the law. We may receive exactly what we need but maybe not exactly in the shape we had envisioned. If we can open up to that possibility, then we have a much better chance to live the best life there is for us.

This also reminded me of a phrase I heard many times growing up: “God writes straight with crooked lines,” to me this means that our path may not take us where we think we should go, it may not reveal to us the shapes we expect to see, but it will take us where we need to go and reveal the shapes that are best for us. It is only when we resist this natural life flow, by stubbornly attaching to specific forms, that not only we suffer but we fail to see what is best for us.

I truly believe we all have a purpose in life, and if we find it and embody it, we will, no doubt have our own ideal life, but in order to find it, we need to connect to our essence, and let go of the many forms we are attached to. In other words, we need to become what we want to experience, and then we will bring that experience to us in many different forms, so the essence comes first and the form follows.

Remember, if you are set on the forms you may miss the essence all together and you will get tired, frustrated and exhausted by trying to always achieve or obtain something, and still feel empty regardless of how successful you are in achieving it.

I encourage you today to reflect on those qualities you really want to experience, and on the many ways you can start to apply those qualities in your life and with those around you. Start today!

Have a good week!

A Grander Scheme, A Larger System

A good friend of mine recently sent me a blog entry from NPR that came out a couple weeks ago and I was totally inspired by it. It made me think about our role in this earth, our connection to the ecosystem and, the mysteries of the universe and of our own existence.

So many mysteries about life remain undiscovered and unexplained still; and it is clear that our planet, as any living entity, keeps changing and so do we. So, it is good to always keep an open mind, be curious and willing to accept new concepts, new paradigms, new possibilities, new realities!

As the famous phrase from Socrates states: “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing,” this of course does not mean we know nothing, but rather we can’t pretend to have total certainty about anything, and this is true at many levels!

When a new discovery threatens to change the Status Quo, or challenges the existing (already accepted) standards, there is always resistance, skepticism and disbelief. Human beings don’t like change, it makes them loose the sense of safety created by certainty and knowledge. Revolutionary discoveries, are often rejected, mocked and even ignored, until they are finally accepted because evidence becomes undeniable, and as time goes by they become the new standard, until… a new discovery comes along. There are many examples of this in our history, from Plato and his theory of a circular earth, to Copernicus who defended that the sun was at the center of the universe, to Darwin and his theory of evolution.

Anyway, the NPR article talks about a pulsing earth, and if you look at the stunning animated picture (a result of stitching a year worth of images of weather patterns), you really see a “breathing” earth, with a heart-like pulsating rhythm. It is really cool, here is the link: This Pulsing Earth

What if, we were indeed part of something much bigger…? what if each one of us was a cell in a larger body…?

When I was a child I used to imagine that all the tiny microorganisms that live inside of our bodies had “a life”. I imagined them as teeny-tiny beings playing, having friends, going to work, etc. and totally oblivious that they were living in my body, that they were connected and had a role in the whole functioning of my system. It was a fun game, but… what if there is some truth to that.

We can say one thing for sure, if we look at the ecosystem, we can’t deny that there is a strong connection between all elements of the planet.

“An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a system“- Wikipedia

So, we are all part of the same “system.” A system that is alive and encompasses not only our planet but the sun, the universe and more!

Another interesting theory of unity and connection is that of the holographic universe, which defends that we are all part of a whole and we each contain all the information of that whole, just like a holographic picture: If you tear a hologram in half, you can still see the whole image in each piece. The same is true with smaller and smaller pieces.

In the Vedic tradition of India, it is held that “as is the smallest, so is the greatest. As is the microcosm, so is the macrocosm.” “As above so below.”

The New York Times had an article way back in 2006, showing the picture of a mouse’s brain (microcosm) and the picture of the universe (macrocosm) and they look incredibly alike… Click here to see them.

The microcosm and macrocosm similarities were also acknowledged by the greeks, as “An ancient Greek Neo-Platonic schema of seeing the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or sub-sub-atomic or even metaphysical-level). In the system the midpoint is Man, who summarizes the cosmos.” – Source: Wikipedia

Anyway, all this is pretty fascinating to me, and I just wanted to share with you the idea that maybe… just maybe, we are part of a much larger scheme. There is no coincidence we are here, we are alive, we have the experiences we have, there is a reason for everything and we each have a unique purpose in this life, as part of a larger scheme.

I do believe each one of us contains and has access to the information of our true and infinite essence, we just have to open up to it. Some food for thought…

Have a good week!

Worries, worries and more worries…

How can we possibly get rid of our worries?

Worrying is a very common thing, and depending on our personality we can be more or less of a worrier, but most people do worry about many different things, whether they admit it or not.

Our worries can be big or small, and they can take up some of our time and attention or they can take up a lot of it. People worry about things like not having enough money to pay bills, getting sick, their kids not doing well in school, loosing their jobs, etc… There are a million things we can worry about on a daily basis.

But worrying is always about our mind projecting into the future, imagining things, it always involves fear of the future, fear of being in a place or a situation that we consider negative, scary. But if we look closely at the things we worry about, in many cases they are unrealistic projections that may never happen. Or even if they are realistic, we often blow them out of proportion.

“I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”
Mark Twain

Indeed, our minds are so incredibly powerful, that their projections can make us experience tremendous fear that can take us away from what is real, from what we have, from the people we love, from the good things around us… If our mind is consumed in fear and anxiety, we are NOT present, we are not living fully and we are missing important things.

So, the key to stop worrying is to learn to quiet our mind, so that eventually we can successfully shut it off when it starts going into all sorts of negative projections; and come back to the present, to what is real, to what we need to deal with.

This became really true for me, about a month ago, when I suffered from a heart attack. I feel God gave me the opportunity to see what I have really learned, because it is easy to stay calm when things are going well in our lives, but when things get rocky, that is when we really know how far we have come.

After all these years of working on my fears, meditating, doing yoga, trying to quiet my mind, be present, live in the moment, etc. I was suddenly in a situation of great fear: fear for my health, for my life, for my kids, for the future, etc…

As I was in the hospital, dealing with all the unpleasant tests and waiting for the Doctors to come to a diagnosis, I realized that I could easily sunk into deep fear and anxiety, or simply BE, deal with the moment, without projecting anything in the future. I noticed for example that as soon as I started thinking of my small children, I would start crying and feeling totally powerless and scared, so, as soon as their little faces or voices came to my mind, I just banished the thought and immediately I felt calmer.

Also, I had always been incredibly afraid of needles, and any sort of intrusive medical procedures, so when they told me they were going to do a cardiac cath, I felt my stomach contracting, I felt totally anxious, but again, I was able to shut off my fear inducing thoughts and just BE in the moment, calm.

As I was recently reading about what happened to me, called a SCAD (Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection), which is a very rare type of heart attack, for which medicine has no answers yet, Doctors have no idea what causes it, how it can be prevented and if it could happen again. I realized I could worry about this all my life, wondering if it could happen again, or, I could just live my life, at peace, since nobody knows what can happen tomorrow, what is the point of worrying after all… So, I stopped reading about it, thinking about it, and I was able to let go of that worry.

Thanks to this experience, I have realized that all these years of personal work have paid off, I am gaining some control of my mind, at least now I know for a fact that our worries are nothing but the workings of our mind projections, AND we can control our minds. If I can do it, anybody can do it!

Of course, we cannot suddenly shut off our thoughts, but the first step is to realize that our thoughts are responsible for most of our fear and worries, and that our mind projections are not real, they are just projections and, we can learn to control our minds. Realizing this is huge!

The next step, for which we really need commitment, is to learn how to quiet our minds, how to clean our minds from the incessant stream of thought and external stimulation, so that in time our thoughts are less controlling, sparse and healthier.

One of my favorite authors: Eckart Tolle says that the longer the time between a perception and a thought the greater the presence, in other words, if our minds do not start thinking immediately about what our senses perceive, but we just experience the perception without any thoughts about it (judgment, labeling, projecting) the more we are present, and presence is real, it is all there is!

So, if you are a serious worrier, stop justifying your worries, instead, consider accepting the fact that you make up the projections that feed your fear, and you can get rid of them if you make some shifts in your life by changing your perception and working on quieting your mind. It takes conviction and commitment, but it is possible, it will transform your life for the better, and, it is never too late to start!

Have a good week!
